How To Survive Cold & Flu Season Naturally

Cold and flu season is officially here. If you have little ones at home, you know how hard it can be to keep them from catching whatever illness is going around school or daycare. However, it's best to try and contain germs as best as you can to prevent them from spreading.

We've rounded up a few tips on how to survive cold and flu season with kids.

5 Tips To Help Prevent The Flu

Be One Step Ahead

If your little one is in daycare or school, you have to be prepared for ANYTHING! Germs run rapid and it's not long before your kid is some sick on the couch. Some tips we found helpful, keep hand sanitizer in the car. As soon as you pick your child up from school have them use a bit of sanitizer. This is just precaution of course but it's still a good idea to wash hands as soon as you come home.

Change your child's clothes when you get home. This might feel a bit extreme, but we've found it to be a helpful hint. It's a good way to rid the germs from the day and get into fresh clean clothes.

If your child takes a multi vitamin, speak to you pediatrician about adding in a vitamin C supplement. Vitamin C is known to help with immune system function and boosts white blood cells. It's a good way to keep you and your family on the up during flu season.

Stay Home When You're Feeling Sick

Yeah right, we know it's easier said then done. If someone in your family isn't feeling well it's best to keep them home. It's better for them to miss one day of school to get some extra rest then getting too run down and potentially missing a week of school with the flu.

We do have some helpful tips if your little ones start to feel unwell. There are some natural ways you can help to fight off the flu.

If your little one is feeling congested, it's a good idea to stay on top of what you're feeling. Don't brush it off and think it's nothing, it could lead to a chest cold. Try our Ah-Choo! Chest Rub with Organic Olive Oil, Eucalyptus & Tea Tree.

If you can sense that germs are starting to make their way into your home and making themselves comfortable, try using some essential oils.

Some essential oils like peppermint and frankincense can naturally support the immune system.  Also, clove oil can protect the body against infection and can speed recovery from the flu.

Stay Active

When the seasons change and the days get shorter, it can be difficult to get the energy to get outside.Exercise is great way to keep your immune system healthy. It's also great to get fresh air. Try to take some time to play outdoors or go for a walk with the little ones. Even as it gets colder a burst of fresh air is good for everyone.

Disinfect The Home

After someone has a cold in the home it's a good idea to disinfect everything. Start by washing sheets, towel, and blankets. Try and keep the children from sharing these types of items if they aren't feeling well. Keep surfaces clean with a disinfectant that kills germs.

One of the hardest tasks (but well worth it) is cleaning your child's toys. Let's be real, they probably don't get cleaned as often as we would like. Take the opportunity when someone gets sick to wipe down and clean everything your kids have touched. Some toys might be harder to clean then others, but it's good to get a general wipe down so rid them of germs.

Up The Veggies

As if dinner time isn't already a struggle. Getting your kids to eat veggies might not be an easy task. That's ok, we've got you covered. Try steaming veggies like spinach, kale, or broccoli and using a blender or Nutribullet to make a smooth puree. You can then add that veggie filled puree to soups or sauces. "Green" mac and cheese is a big hit in our house! It's a fun way to keep meals interesting and get the family the nutrients they need.

Take Care of YOU

All in all, you can do everything, you can to try and prevent illness in your home, but sometimes the luck just isn't on your side. Moms and dads spend so much time taking care of everyone in the home and sometimes forget to take care of themselves. Make sure you get some down time, stay hydrated, and take some time home if needed.
