10 Winter Activies For Kids
The winter is the longest (and darkest) season for parents. For some of us, the cold weather and snowy conditions can put a damper on fun outdoor activities. Kids want to keep busy all year long, so we’ve come up with a list of fun winter activities for you and your little ones.
Winter Crafts And Activities For Kids
Find A Play Group
Easier said then done, but it’s a good idea to try and find a play group in the winter months to help keep the kids (and you) social in the summer months. It’s easy to cozy up indoors and sometimes a good ole’ rest is needed in the winter. However, when the cabin fever sets in, it’s nice to have a play group where you can take the kids to play with friends. You should check local park systems in your area as well as libraries or local Facebook groups.
Library
Check out the library in the winter. For the younger kiddos they usually offer story time schedules. It’s also a fun way to introduce your little ones to different kinds of books and puzzles. If you sign up for a library card, it’s exciting for kids to pick out their own books or videos to take home with them. You can even include an entire project around it. Pick out a book or video and have your child draw a picture about it.
Crafting
Take a trip to a craft store. Get the kids excited to make their own projects, pick out supplies and make something of their own! If you need some help with ideas, check out these 42 easy crafts to do with your little ones. Or do some easy and fun wood projects.
Build A Snowman
The snow can certainly cause some headaches. Roads are a mess, stores are packed, schools are closed. Use that as an opportunity to enjoy the winter for what it is. You can go out and play, build a snowman, collect pine cones, make snow angels. A great family activity that’ll surely tire out the whole family.
Have An Indoor Picnic
Who says you can’t have a picnic in the winter? Grab some blankets and choose a roomy area of the house. Pack a lunch and have the kids sit on the blanket just as they would outdoors on a sunny spring day. A fun way to mix up your lunch routine and connect with your kids.
Bake Cookies
Everyone bakes cookies for Christmas, but why not continue all winter long? Use these longs winter days to bake different kinds of cookies. Have the kids choose the cookie and the recipe and help out with mixing and measuring ingredients. It’s a great way to get kids involved with cooking as well as a lesson in math, measuring, and numbers.
Indoor Play Areas
An indoor play area can be life changing in the winter months. Although you’ll have to pay for your child to enter, this could be a special treat (worth while). Just for local indoor play cafes in your area. It’s a great way to let your child run free and play for awhile, when it’s just too cold to go to the park.
Plan A Trip To An Aquarium
Take a trip to an aquarium with the little ones this winter. A great adventure for everyone. Take the time to learn about all of the sea animals and where they live.
Start An Indoor Garden
There are many plants that can survive indoors and without much sunlight. Have your kids help prepare an indoor garden. Pick out the pots, the plants, and where you’d like to keep them. Let them help you water and take care of the planet each day and watch their growing progress.
Science Experiments
A great way to use up a few hours in your day. Try DIY science experiments with your kids. Let them help set it up and figure out the instructions. This is a great way to get kids interested in a variety of basic science knowledge as well as problem solving skills. Not to mention, it’s SO much fun!
Surviving Winter With Your Family
The winter can seem to drag on for some. Try and make the most of it by experiencing different kinds of play and learning with your kids. Although there may not be as much to do in the winter months, it’s still a great season to take advantage of. Try some of these winter activities for kids and let us know what you think!
